Directions To Make Bows From Ribbon

Fluffy bow made from ribbon.

There are many different ways to make bows from ribbon. From simple double loop bows to wear on a barrette to elaborately designed bows to decorate packages, making bows can be a form of artistic expression. A fluffy, or pompom, bow is one style of bow that's suitable for hair accessories, packages and floral arrangements. You'll need a lot of ribbon to make a fluffy bow, but the end result is worth it.

Instructions

1. Unroll several feet of ribbon from the spool. Do not cut the ribbon from the spool.

2. Make a loop at the end of the ribbon strip 4 to 5 inches long. Hold the tip of the ribbon at the base of the loop and make another loop equal to the first, but in the opposite direction.

3. Continue to loop the ribbon in a circle 15 more times. Hold the loop in the center as you wrap. You will have a thick stack of ribbon that is actually a circle, but which has a loop on each side when you hold it in the center. Cut the ribbon from the spool at least 2 inches past the center point.

4. Fold the ribbon circle in half so that the two loops are facing up. Holding the ends of the ribbon stack flush, turn the ribbon so that the double loops are facing down and the center fold is facing up.

5. Cut both sides of the ribbon toward the fold in a diagonal cut about 1 inch long. The fold of the ribbon is now in an inverted V shape.

6. Open the ribbon so that the loops are on either side of the V shape. The shape in the center of the ribbon looks like an hour glass. Make sure to hold the center of the ribbon tightly as you maneuver it.

7. Wrap the twist tie tightly around the V in the center of the ribbon.

8. Hold the bow with one of the loops facing up. Separate the inside ribbon layer from the loop by pulling it to the side and then toward you. Continue to make half of the bow by successively pulling the layers of ribbon out and toward you.

9. Repeat Step 8 with the remaining ribbon loop. Fluff the bow to the desired shape after all of the ribbon loops have been separated.
