Curly corkscrews are the inspiration for these crafts.
Adding a corkscrew shape to a craft is a perfect way to add pizzazz to any project. This curly shape mimics the tight spiral of actual corkscrews. In fact, corkscrews themselves can be used as part of corkscrew crafts, although care must be used as corkscrews are extremely sharp. Add this curly shape to your next craft project for instant flair and fun.
Corkscrew Barrette
Fancy barrettes featuring colorful corkscrewed ribbons will delight little girls. This craft requires adult supervision. Preheat your oven to 275 degrees. Using one yard of 1/4 or 3/8 inch wide 100 percent polyester ribbon per barrette, attach one end of your ribbon length to the end of a 1/4 inch wide, 18 inch long dowel with a clothespin. Tightly spiral the ribbon around the dowel, without allowing the ribbon to overlap itself. Secure the other end with another clothespin. Place a sheet of aluminum foil in your oven, and place the dowel(s) on it; bake for 20 minutes, remove from oven, and cool. Secure the ribbons to an empty metal barrette base using embroidery thread or hot glue, in whatever pattern you like.
Corkscrew Gift Wrapping Bows
The ribbon used for wrapping gifts is easy to corkscrew and turn into a full, fun gift topper. Start with gift ribbon, choosing a single color or a variety. Cut ribbon into lengths: for a short, fluffy ribbon, use pieces around 12 inches long, and for a longer, more dramatic ribbon cut pieces into 24 inch lengths. Look carefully at your ribbon; one side will be smooth, the other bumpy; on some ribbon types, one side will be shiny and the other matte. Place the flat edge of a closed pair of scissors against the bumpy or matte side of the ribbon, pressing the blade against the ribbon with your thumb. Holding one end of the ribbon, pull the entire length of ribbon against the blade. The ribbon will curl; if you want a tighter corkscrew, repeat. Use a staple to attach ribbon to a small square of peel-and-stick paper.
Corkscrew Bracelet
Corkscrew bracelets are fairly easy to make because wire curls into a corkscrew spiral quite easily and retains its shape well. To size the bracelet, cut a piece of wire that is the circumference of the wrist plus four inches; fold in half. This is the base for your bracelet. Create corkscrew "beads" by twisting short lengths of wire around small cylindrical object, like a knitting needle. After gently removing from the forming object, thread these "beads" on to the bracelet base, alternating with actual beads if desired. Once your bracelet is almost full, hook the end of the bracelet through the end with the fold, where the base wire was folded in half.
Bedazzled Corkscrew
Decorating an actual corkscrew can make a fun craft as well, although this project is not appropriate for young children. Use small rhinestones with at least one flat side. (Peel-and-stick rhinestones will be insufficiently sticky, as corkscrews are generally handled very firmly when removing a cork from a bottle.) Apply a small amount of heavy duty glue to the back of each rhinestone and stick in your desired pattern on to the handle of the corkscrew. Allow to dry thoroughly before using.
