A cummerbund is a wide sash worn around a man's waist on formal occasions with a dinner jacket or tuxedo coat. The name is derived from an ancient Persian word for "waist band" and was adopted into English usage in the 17th century. A cummerbund is often an expected part of formal dress. Follow these steps to tie one properly.
Instructions
1. Hold the cummerbund up to your waist with the sash across your abdomen. Turn the cummerbund so the pleats are facing upward. This is a tradition dating to the 17th century, when men would use the pleats as pockets for opera ticket stubs.
2. Bring the two ends with buckling hardware behind your back, and determine if the length needs to be adjusted. A cummerbund should fit snugly across your abdomen, but not so tightly that it suffocates you. Adjust the sliding buckle on one end until the buckles come together behind your back for a snug fit.
3. Slip the T-shaped buckle on one end through the oval loop on the other end of the cummerbund, and twist slightly so the T-shape stays securely in place inside the buckle.
4. Adjust the cummerbund across your abdomen so the sash is level on both sides. Smooth out the pleated material if necessary.
