Use gentle styling products when styling a toddler's hair.
Styling a toddler's hair involves a great deal of personal preference. Toddler hairstyles can range from a bit wild, such as a Mohawk or rat-tail, to more traditional, conservative hairstyles, such as ponytails or bobs. Using hair accessories, such as barrettes or bows, is popular when styling a young girl's hair. Needless to say, hairstyle options are more varied for toddler girls, than boys.
Instructions
1. Brush a toddler's hair using a soft-bristle brush. Toddler hair is typically thin and close to the scalp. A soft-bristle brush will not scratch the scalp and will make the styling process much more comfortable for a toddler with baby-fine hair. Always begin styling longer hair with a thorough hair brushing. This also makes the styling process more tolerable for a toddler by ensuring that hair is at its most manageable.
2. Style a toddler's hair into a traditional ponytail. Using a comb or a brush, pull the hair back evenly so that the hair resembles a tail. Wrap a hair tie around the base of the ponytail to keep it in place. For girls, two ponytails is a classic style. To achieve the look, part the hair evenly in the middle and make two ponytails, one on each side of the head. A current trend is to place random ponytails all over the head, if the toddler has enough hair to accommodate the style.
3. Cut a toddler girl's hair into a classic short bob. Bobs became popular in the 1920s and are still a cute, low-maintenance style for active toddler girls. Colorful bows and decorated barrettes are popular hair accessories for little girls who wear a bobbed hairstyle.
4. Style toddler boy's hair into current styles such as the sweep or the comb-down. The sweep is a short, clean cut, in which the hair is parted and combed to one side. The comb-down is also a short, simple hairstyle in which the hair is combed-down toward the forehead, as the name suggests.
5. Use clippers to give a toddler boy a crew-cut. A classic young boy hairstyle, the crew-cut is ultra short and helps maintain a clean-cut appearance for a good, long while. This style requires the use of clippers, which is a frightening ordeal for some toddlers. Make sure your toddler is able to endure the sound of hair clippers before asking a stylist to give such a cut to a boy.
6. Use gentle styling products, if you use any at all. Toddler-friendly shampoo, conditioner and styling products, such as hair gel, will typically be fragrance and paraben-free. Also, many child-friendly styling products are made with all natural ingredients to ensure that the product is gentle and will not irritate sensitive toddler skin.
