Add colorful silk flowers to accent a baby headband or hair bow.
Make colorful hair bows and headbands for your infant to match every outfit in her closet. Stretchy headbands can be adjusted as she grows for a hair accessory that will last for a little bit longer than the outfits. Make hair bows from a soft Velcro material or use a clip that does not tug or yank out hair when she removes the decoration.
Instructions
Soft Cloth Headbands
1. Measure the circumference of the infant's head from just above the forehead, behind the ears and down to the nape of the neck. Add one inch to this measurement to obtain the length of the fabric for the headband. For a circumference of 14 inches, the total length is 15 inches.
2. Cut a rectangular piece of fabric, using the final measurement obtained in the previous step for the length and three inches for the width.
3. Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise to make a long, thin rectangle with the right side of the fabric facing inward. Pin it in place. Sew the side edge together using a straight stitch.
4. Cut another rectangle from the fabric that measures 1 3/4 inches wide. The length should be 25 percent less than the length of the first rectangle.
5. Fold the rectangle in half in the same way as the first rectangle. Sew the rough edges together with a straight stitch.
6. Turn both rectangles right-side-out.
7. Insert a piece of ½-inch wide elastic just a little bit longer than the rectangle into the smaller rectangle. Pull it through to the other side with a crochet hook.
8. Insert one end of the smaller rectangle with the elastic into one of the open ends of the larger rectangle. Sew the edges in place to close the open end.
9. Pull on the elastic to make the fabric along the short rectangle bunch up. Pin the elastic in place to keep the fabric scrunched. Cut off any excess fabric and insert the smaller rectangle end with the elastic into the remaining open end of the larger rectangle. Sew the pieces together to sew the open end shut, completing the headband.
Hair Bow
10. Cut an 8-inch-long piece of ½-inch wide ribbon and a 1 ½-inch long piece of ribbon.
11. Use a hot glue gun to spread a thin layer of glue along 1 ½ inches of one end. Press the glue-covered piece of ribbon firmly against an alligator clip or plastic baby barrette. Let the glue dry for 20 to 30 minutes.
12. Fold the ribbon protruding past the clip back over top of the glued ribbon. Make a zigzag-type pattern, going back and forth over top of the clip until you run out of ribbon. Make each zigzag tier a little bit smaller than the last.
13. Add a dab of glue to the end of the ribbon and press it down firmly onto the piece of ribbon underneath.
14. Wrap the 1 ½-inch piece of ribbon around the center of the hair bow and glue it to the underside of the hair bow.
