Korker Bows Instructions

Korker Ribbon

A korker bow is a popular hair bow made from ribbons. The ribbons may be one color or more than one color and are shaped into a corkscrew shape before they are cut and used to assemble the hair bow. While these bows look difficult to make, they are surprisingly simple.

Make the Korker Ribbons

Make the korker ribbons first. Use 1/4-inch diameter dowels to wrap the ribbons around. The dowels must be short enough that they will fit into the oven. For best results, use grosgrain ribbons of any width according to your desired result.

Attach one end of the ribbon to one end of the dowel and secure it with a clothespin. Wrap the ribbon around the dowel carefully, making sure the ribbon is straight, even and not twisted as you wrap. Wrap until the entire dowel is covered with wrapped ribbon, cut the ribbon, and secure this end with another clothespin.

Make more wrapped dowels with a variety of ribbons so that you will have a variety of korker ribbons to choose from to make different korker bows.

Place the wrapped dowels onto a clean baking sheet and bake at 275 degrees F for approximately 25 minutes. Monitor the baking process carefully. Remove from the oven, allow to cool and carefully slide the ribbons from the dowels without changing the corkscrew shape of the ribbons.

Make the Korker Bows

Lay out the korker ribbons. Measure and cut 3-inch pieces of korker ribbons. To make one full korker bow you will need approximately 30 3-inch pieces of korker ribbons. Cut an 8-inch length of round elastic and lay this out flat on a work surface. Group the korker ribbons on top of the elastic so that they are perpendicular and cross the elastic as shown. If making a multicolored bow, mix up the ribbon colors as you place them on the round elastic.

Bring up the ends of the round elastic around the korker ribbons and tie the elastic very tightly in a double knot. Nestle the knot down into the center of the korker ribbons so it is concealed. Look at the korker ribbons extending out from the center and adjust any that are uneven by pulling them from the opposite side of the bow.

Tie the extending pieces of round elastic to a hair band or clip the round elastic off and hot glue the korker bow to a hair clip or barrette.
