Bow windows are basically just bay windows curved in a certain section of a home where the room extends outward. When standing in the right place, they offer a fuller vision of the outdoors. Although these windows let in a lot of light, they also allow people to look in from outside, so draping the windows in an effective yet aesthetically pleasing manner is often a necessity for maintaining your privacy.
Curved Curtain Rods
As the bow windows are by definition curved, purchase and install curved curtain rods so that the drapes will hang even with the window and window frame. Straight curtain rods will look subtly off to an observer and not necessarily keep the drapery even with the window panes. Make sure the curtain rods are installed in the wooden frame of the window itself or installed with anchors in the particle board wall so they won't come out with heavy drapes or with anyone or anything pulling on them.
Individual Window Shade Treatments
Individually picking out different drapes for each bow window is the most reasonable and affordable way to find the proper drapes for your bow windows. When picking the drapes, keep in mind that bow windows are usually show windows, so they are usually in high traffic areas outside. So these drapes or shades need to be thick enough to offer the proper amount of privacy. Wool or heavy cotton drapes which fit the window frame or are bigger than it are a good choice. Individual cafe curtains are also a good idea. They allow you to see outside but provide a certain amount of ground floor privacy.
Customized Cloth Roller Shade
By installing a track that follows the contour of your bow windows, one large cloth drape can be used to open and close off the view from the bow windows. This works in the same way that certain, old movie theater curtains used to work, one curtain running on a track that could be slid open and closed. While this isn't terribly complicated to install, it can be more expensive than installing individual window shades and curtain rods. However, this drape is much easier to open and close as there is only one movement required to pull it.
