Create A Hair Bow Having A Jig

Hair bows so simple you can make one for every outfit!

Jigs are a great way for making lots of hair bows so they are all uniform in shape and size. This allows for making sets that will match when worn together. A simple jig made of sturdy cardboard will last through the construction of many hair bows and simply adjusting the width of the jig makes it easy to make smaller or larger hair bows for any sized child.

Instructions

1. Cut sturdy cardboard into a 2 x 5-inch rectangle. Work from one 2-inch side mark and cut a slot 3/8-inch by 3 inches directly in the center to form what looks like an upside-down pair of pants.

2. With the body of the jig toward you lay the piece of 7-inch long ½-inch wide ribbon straight across the back of the legs right side away from the jig. Wrap each side of the ribbon around to the front of the jig, crossing them in the center in an X shape.

3. Thread a sewing needle with matching thread. In this step the needle is not for sewing but aids in passing the thread through the jig. Working in the slot of the jig, wrap the thread around the center knot area of the bow five times to make the gathered knot area of the bow, finish by tying the two ends of the thread in front of the bow where the two ends cross. Clip the thread close to the knot. A dot of clear glue or nail polish helps the knot stay tied.

4. Finish the knot area by cutting one 1 3/4 inch long piece of ¼-inch wide ribbon. Lay one cut end at the back of the bow center and wrap the ribbon, right side out, around the knot of the bow, hiding the thread wraps. Turn under the opposite end of the ¼-inch ribbon and stitch over the cut end with matching thread and hand needle, to hide all raw edges, thread wraps, and knots.
