The butterfly loom is a small, hand-held wooden board with notched intersections cut into the edge. It is available in a variety of sizes and creates an open weave design. By wrapping and knotting yarn or ribbon around the notches, you can create colorful hair bows. You can make small bows to attach to a clip or larger bows for headbands using different loom sizes. With a little practice following the weaving techniques, you will complete your hair bow project quickly.
Instructions
1. Attach the end of a piece of ribbon to the back of the loom with tape. The front of the loom has the hinge that folds in toward you. The back has a latch to hold the hinged loom open while you work. The baby butterfly loom will create a bow about 3 inches wide.
2. Bring the ribbon up from the back, over the first notch on the top left on the loom.
3. Wrap the ribbon down to the first notch on the lower left of the loom, around the back of the notch to the right and back up to the second notch on the top left. Continue wrapping until you reach the end of the row. You can wrap a single strand of ribbon or several strands together.
4. Turn the loom one quarters to the left and wrap the yarn around the right top corner notch. Continue wrapping back and forth around the loom, turning at each corner, until you are back where you started.
5. Bring the ribbon to the back of the loom. It will be in the notch next to where the beginning of the ribbon was brought from the back of the loom. Cut the ribbon, leaving a tail.
6. Remove the tape from the beginning of the ribbon and pull both tails around to the front of the loom, following instructions with the loom. Tie the two ends together over the first intersection of ribbons at the top left of the loom.
7. Thread the needle that came with the loom with another strand of ribbon.
8. Hold the loom with the hinges facing you, place the needle under the top left intersecting ribbons and tie a knot. Cut the excess tail of ribbon.
9. Place the needle under the intersection and bring it around to the top, leaving a loop. Thread the needle through the loop and pull tight around the intersection.
10. Repeat down the ribbon and complete the knotting on each intersection of ribbon on the loom, following directions included with the loom for the type of stitch you are using.
11. Finish by pulling the threaded needle between the ribbons in each intersection of yarns and knotting at the last intersection. Cut off the excess thread and needle.
12. Turn the loom over and unlatch the back. Fold the loom on the hinge and remove the ribbon by pushing off the notched edges. Do not finish the edges as you would if you were joining the piece to other pieces for a large project.
13. Gather the center of the finished piece in your hand. Cut a length of ribbon and wrap it around the center. Fluff the looped ribbon edges and cut some of the loops, if desired.
14. Hot glue the hair bow to a clip or headband, or attach to a ribbon to tie around the head.
