Bright bursts of sparkling color light up the night sky on New Year's Eve and the Fourth of July. Use these dazzling displays of pyrotechnics as inspiration for a playful hair accessory. Make your own firecracker hair bows with stiff grosgrain ribbon.
Instructions
1. Measure with a ruler and cut with scissors 20 8-inch-long pieces of ribbon. Cut the ends of each ribbon at a 45-degree angle. Heat the cut ends of each ribbon with a lighter to seal them. Get the ends of the ribbon close to the flame, but don't actually stick them in the flame.
2. Wrap a piece of thread around the center of each ribbon strip three times. Tie the ends of the thread together tightly so it gathers the center of the ribbon.
3. Place five ribbons on your work surface with each ribbon running horizontally and one ribbon placed above another. Place five ribbons on top of those. Make the second layer of ribbons run vertically with the ribbons side by side. Lay out another five ribbons on top of the second layer. Lay these ribbons out like you did the first layer. Add the finally layer in the same manner as you did the second.
4. Wrap a piece of thread about the center of the stack diagonally from the upper left to the lower right. Wrap the thread around the entire stack of 20 ribbons 10 times. Tie the ends of the thread together. Fluff the firecracker bow until its shape is pleasing.
5. Place a dot of hot glue on the top of an alligator clip. Place the center of the underside of the bow in the hot glue to attach it to the clip.
