Patterns for knitted hair accessories abound, but knitted bow patterns are hard to find. If you want to knit up an extra-feminine accessory, a large hair bow is ideal. A knitted bow is made of two garter-stitch rectangles -- a small one and a large one. The small one becomes the middle piece of the bow, and its tightness determines how exaggerated the two side pieces are. Even beginning knitters can make knitted bows using basic skills.
Instructions
1. Cast on six stitches and knit four rows.
2. Knit into the front and back of each stitch in the fifth row. You will have 12 stitches.
3. Knit in garter stitch or the stitch pattern of your choice until the piece measures 6 1/2 inches from the cast-on edge.
4. Knit two stitches together (K2tog) all the way across. "K2tog" means to insert your needle through two stitches at once and pull a single wrap through. Knit eight more six-stitch rows.
5. Knit into the front and back of each stitch all the way across. You will have 12 stitches.
6. Knit in garter stitch or the stitch pattern of your choice for 6 inches.
7. K2tog all the way across. Knit four more rows.
8. Bind off all stitches. Cut the yarn and use the yarn tail to sew the cast-on and bind-off edges together in the back middle of the bow. The middle of the bow will be indented on both sides.
9. Cast on six stitches. Knit a 3 1/2-inch rectangle and bind off.
10. Wrap the small rectangle over the middle of the bow and sew its cast-on and bind-off edges together at the back of the bow. Your bow is ready to be slipped over a barrette or sewn to a headband.
