Monogramming is the practice of embroidering the owner's initials onto fabric goods. Monogrammed towels, linens and clothing used to be standard fare in the world of fabric goods, but in today's consumer market, monograms are considered a luxurious type of personalization. As with many practices, there are differing opinions on arrange the initials in a monogram, based on whose initials are being utilized. Traditionally, monograms are arranged in a first, last and middle initial arrangement, with all of the letters being capitalized and the center initial, that for the last name, embroidered larger than the other two.

Bath Towel Monogram
1. Fold the bath towel in half vertically to locate the center of the front bottom hem. Insert a straight pin to mark the center. There are two standard designs of bath towels: those with a decorative woven band a few inches from the bottom hem and those with only a bottom hem.
2. Measure 4 inches from the towel's bottom hem or 2 inches from the towel's woven decorative band using the center point on the towel's bottom hem to determine the center of the towel. Embroideryarts suggests using letters about 4 inches high for full-sized bath towels.
3. Insert a straight pin through the towel to mark the central location of the last name initial. The spacing of the first name initial positioned to the left of the center last name initial, and the spacing of the middle name initial positioned to the right of the center last name initial, will differ based on the size and style of the embroidered letters used. Monogram according to your preferred method.
Hand Towel Monogram
4. Fold the hand towel in half vertically to locate the center of the bottom hem. Insert a straight pin at the center point.
5. Measure up 2 inches from the straight pin for a towel with no woven decorative band. Measure 1 1/2 inches above the woven band if one is present.
6. Insert a straight pin to indicate the center point at the measured height. Embroideryarts recommends using monogram letters of about 2 inches in length. Spacing between the three initials will differ based on the style and width of the letters used.
