What Supplies Are Needed to Make Hair Bows?
Making your own hair bows is a great way to save money on accessories for your little girl. But when made without the right supplies, you might find that they don't look as sharp as they could, or fall apart easily. Look for good quality supplies and materials to make your hair bows look professional and last through activities and playtime.
Ribbon
Looking at the racks and spools of ribbon might inspire you to make all sorts of hair bows, but not all ribbon is created equal. The best ribbon for hair bows is a grosgrain ribbon, which has a tight weave and is very durable, as well as being flexible and easy to work with. Grosgrain comes in many styles and colors, so you shouldn't feel limited when it comes to choosing the ribbon. You can experiment with other types of ribbon as you become more confident in your bow-making skills.
Clips
You'll need to purchase clips onto which you can glue your hair bows. There are two types of clips that are popular for hair bows: snap clips and alligator clips. Snap clips snap open when you bend them. They are perfect for embellishing and simple bows, and word best on thinner hair. Alligator clips open and shut with a lever on the end and have teeth to grip thick hair. You can buy different kinds of clips at a beauty supply store.
Flowers
Large flowers are an easy addition to a hair bow and they can add a lot of flair to an otherwise plain accessory. The best flowers can be found in your craft store's faux flowers section. Look for bouquets with large, colorful blooms. When you're ready to use them on your bows, just pop the bloom off of the stem and glue it on.
Embellishments
Use embellishments to add personality to the hair bows that you make. You can find craft buttons and small rhinestones at a craft store, and glue them on for an easy way to jazz up the hair bows. Look for small embellishments with flat backs that will be easy to affix to your hair bows.
Adhesives
You'll need some way to glue your hair bows together. The easiest adhesive to use is hot glue. You'll find that you'll get the tightest bond. If you aren't comfortable with using a hot glue gun, you can try using fabric adhesive as an alternative. Also, make sure you pick up a bottle of Fray Check to dab on the ends of your ribbon to keep it from fraying and unraveling.
