Create A Brooch From Plastic

Make homemade brooches as gifts for family and friends.

Making a brooch out of plastic is a creative way to boost your sense of fashion. Shrinking your plastic piece will condense the brooch surface and increase the sturdiness of your craft. The trick for a safe and successful shrink is to employ Type 6 plastic. Type 6 plastic, according to Art-Fun-Cheap, is used to manufacture most deli containers and plastic cups available in the grocery store. Once you shrink the plastic, decorate the surface with whatever colors or accessories you wish.

Instructions

1. Measure and cut out a clean and smooth piece of 3-inch by 3-inch Type 6 plastic.

2. Rub both sides and the edges of the plastic with 120-grit sandpaper. The sandpaper will dull the plastic to allow absorption of different mediums, such as colored pencil.

3. Preheat your oven to 250 degrees F. Open kitchen windows or doors to allow for proper ventilation.

4. Place a 12-inch by 12-inch piece of parchment paper onto a cookie sheet. Position the plastic onto the cookie sheet at the center. Place the cookie sheet into the heated oven.

5. Open the oven door and flatten the plastic with a metal spatula if the plastic begins to curl. Allow the plastic to heat for up to 10 minutes until it shrinks to the size you desire.

6. Turn off the oven. Remove the cookie sheet from the oven with oven mitts. Allow 30 minutes for the plastic to cool.

7. Decorate the top side of the plastic brooch with colored pencils or acrylic paint. Allow two hours for the brooch to dry if you use paint. Bond plastic beads, pearls or other faux jewels to the top side of the brooch with permanent epoxy.

8. Flip the brooch over so the back side is exposed. Bond the stabilizing bar of a small safety pin to the brooch with permanent epoxy at the center. Bonding only the stabilizing bar allows you to lock or unlock the metal safety-pin latch.
