Make Baby Hair Bows & Bands

Hair bows are cute and easy to make.

Making bows and bands for baby girls can be a fun project. These tiny accessories don't have to cost a lot, and they can turn out very cute and professional looking. A simple band doesn't even require any sewing, and it can be made very quickly. Some store-bought bands leave indention marks on a baby's head, but by making your own, you can get the the right size. You can make bows to match every outfit your baby has, or to coordinate with every holiday, without spending a bundle.

Instructions

Head bands

1. Purchase 18 inches of stretchy lace between 1/2 inch and 2 inches wide.

2. Wrap it around the baby's head to get the correct measurement. Cut at the appropriate place.

3. Stitch or glue the two ends together, creating a circle of lace.

Flower Bow

4. Decide how many layers of bow you want. The wider the bow, the more layers you can have, and the thicker it will be. Four layers is the minimum you probably want. The layers are graduated sizes, with the largest on the bottom, so that the bow looks like a flower. For a 3-inch bow that will look cute on a little baby's head, you need four layers.

5. Cut your ribbon. You can use all the same color for each layer, or use coordinating colors. You need six 8-inch pieces for the first layer, five 7-inch pieces for the second layer, four 6-inch pieces for the third layer, and four 5-inch pieces for the fourth layer. Each piece of ribbon makes two loops.

6. Heat the ends with the lighter so that the ribbon will not fray. Be careful not to light the ribbon on fire; you are simply melting the edges so that they won't fray from use.

7. Take all the ribbon pieces on the first layer, and put them evenly on top of each other. If you have ribbon with a printed side, place it down.

8. Bring one end of the stack of ribbon over to the other end, making a loop. If you are using a printed ribbon, the printed sides should be facing each other.

9. Push the threaded needle through the middle of the loop, going through all the ribbon pieces. It should be in the middle of the pieces of ribbon. Stop when the ribbons are about halfway through the needle.

10. Let go of the ribbon, and spread them out evenly around the needle. Use the clip to hold the ribbons in place.

11. Take the end of one of the ribbon pieces, bring it over in a loop back to the needle, and push it down the needle.

12. Pick up the ribbon directly next to the one you just did and repeat the step, pushing the ribbon onto the needle. Go all around the needle, looping the ribbons over and onto the needle.

13. Pull the needle all the way through until the knot at the end of your thread is pulled tight against the ribbon.

14. Push the needle back through the middle of the ribbons, taking a stitch. Make four or five stitches, making sure that they are tight. When you are sure it will hold together, make another knot and cut the thread. Take off the alligator clip.

15. Repeat these steps for each layer.

16. Glue the layers on top of each other, making sure that they are tight and firm.

17.Glue the button or other embellishment on the top of the bow directly in the center. This finishes the bow and conveniently covers the stitches you made.

18. Glue the bow to a small, baby barrette or headband.
