Christmas Hair Bow Crafts

A decorative hair bow gives an ordinary outfit a bit of Christmas spirit. Whether for a little girl on Christmas day or for a lady attending a holiday party, wearing a bright bow in the hair adds to the festive feeling. While holiday hair bows are available commercially, making them at home gives a personal touch to the item.

From Commercial to Craft

When the holiday season rolls around, retail outlets fill the shelves with Christmas bows of various sizes, shapes and colors. While many are compelled to make the bow for a holiday hair bow themselves, these commercial offerings are an option for the beginning crafter or anyone that wishes to skip a step in the project. Several small bows sold for tree decorations may be combined to form a singular hair bow. Larger bows intended for doors and wall hangings might turn into a large bow to be worn on the back of the head. Fancy bows intended for wrapping presents lend themselves to becoming decorative hair accessories.

Barrettes, Clips and Headbands

When crafting Christmas hair bows, barrettes, clips and headbands are options for a base. Attaching the bow to one of these apparatus allows the bow to be secured in the hair. A French-style barrette offers a separate top layer for attaching decorative items. Use hot glue to attach a bow to the top layer and it is ready to go. Alligator clips, or open-end hair clips, allow for the top opening to slide through a ready bow without the use of adhesive. For a cloth headband, use fabric glue to attach the bow or hot glue for the plastic or hard counterpart. These bands should be in matching Christmas colors as they will show in the hair. A simple ponytail holder or rubber band is also an option. Attach the bow to this type of hair holder using crafting wire.

Accessories

To add to the Christmas spirit of a hair bow, add accessories. Consider attaching sprigs of holly or ivy to the bottom of a holiday hair bow. A small piece of an evergreen bush might pop out the top of the bow. Glue silver or gold beads to the bow or string them to make a fall from the hair piece. For a touch of sophistication, attach Christmas-related gold charms to the bow. If the bow is for a child, consider whimsical decorations including a Santa Claus or reindeer head. Miniature presents or even jingle bells add to the holiday spirit.

Alternative Bows

Ribbon bows are not the only option for crafting a Christmas hair bow. Traditional holiday items, including ivy and garland, may be transformed into hair accessories. Tie the items into bow shapes and attach to the selected holder. Several pieces of tinsel may be looped into bow shapes for a shiny head piece.
