Make Pretty Princess Hair Bows

Use different-colored ribbons to make a hair bow fit for a pretty princess.

Pink, sparkly hair bows are the perfect addition to make your child feel like a pretty princess. Hair bows are perfect for everyday wear, but also accessorize a costume or dress-up gown. Making beautiful bows is simple and will save money from having to purchase them in the store. With the right technique, you can create hair bows with several loops, layers and colors. Choose pink, purple or sparkly ribbon for the bows to please your pretty princess.

Instructions

1. Determine the measurements for the bows and strands of ribbon. Decide on the desired width for the bottom bow. Double the measurement and add 1/2 inch to allow for a slight overlapping. Subtract 1 inch from the bottom bow to determine the width needed for the top bow. Determine the length of the ribbons hanging from the hair bow. Double this measurement as one ribbon will be folded in half to make two strands. For example, if the desired width of the bottom bow is 4 inches, the cut ribbon should measure 8 1/2 inches. The ribbon for the top bow will measure 7 1/2 inches. If you desire strands that measure 4 inches, the cut ribbon should measure 8 inches.

2. Measure and cut all of the ribbon pieces. Cut a small 3-inch scrap piece of ribbon to conceal the middle part of the bows.

3. Create the bottom bow. Match up the two cut ends, forming a loop with the ribbon, right side out. Overlap the ends about 1/2 inch. Turn the loop so the overlapped ends are at the bottom center of the loop. Press the top center of the loop down to the bottom. Hold the centers together, closing the middle of the loop and creating a small loop on either side.

4. Insert a threaded needle into the bottom of the ribbon, directly in the center of the overlapped ends. Push the needle through the ends and the top ribbon, securing them together.

5. Hold the ribbon together and wrap the thread around the center. The thread will wrap over the top of the ribbon, under and back to the top. This creates the bow. Wrap the thread around the center several times. Tie off and cut the thread.

6. Create the top bow using the same method as the bottom bow. Repeat steps 3 through 5.

7. Fold the ribbon for the strands in half to locate the center. If you are using more than one ribbon to create several strands, stack them on top of one another. Push a threaded needle up through the center of the ribbon. For multiple ribbons, ensure the needle passes through the center of each one, attaching them together. Wrap the thread around the center of the ribbon, pulling the middle together. This makes it easier to attach the strands to the bow. Tie off and cut the thread. Cut a "V" shape into the bottom of each strand.

8. Dab a dot of hot glue on the thread on top of the bottom bow. Place the top bow onto the glue, centering the thread with the bottom bow. Allow to dry.

9. Turn the two bows over so they are face down. Place a dot of hot glue on the thread on the back of the bottom bow. Press the strands onto the glue, lining up the threaded centers. Ensure the patterned side of the strands is facing down with the bows. Allow to dry.

10. Place a dot of hot glue onto the back of the strands. Press a ponytail tie or hair clip onto the glue dot. Ensure the tie or clip is facing sideways, hiding behind the bows. Allow to dry.

11. Glue one end of the 3-inch center piece of ribbon onto the back of the hair bow, on top of the tie or clip. Wrap the ribbon around the front of the bows, hiding all of the threaded centers. Glue the ribbon to the back of the hair bow, securing the loose end into place. Allow to dry. Cut off any extra length of the center ribbon, if necessary.
