Korkers Instructions

Make some hair accessories that are more creative than simple elastics.

Korkers are curly ribbons that are used to make hair bows. You can make the curly ribbons any size you would like, sew them together and attach a plastic or metal hair clip to them for an attractive hair accessory. Use ribbons of the same color or pattern to match a particular outfit or use ribbons of contrasting colors or patterns for a flamboyant look. You can also use the korker ribbons to make shoelaces for baby or toddler shoes.

Instructions

1. Cut an approximately 16-inch piece of 3/8-inch or ½-inch ribbon. Cut about 30 lengths if you would like to make the korker hair bow.

2. Clip one end of the ribbon to the top of a heat-resistant wooden dowel. Use a heat-resistant clip to hold the ribbon in place.

3. Wrap the length of the ribbon around the wooden dowel tightly. Attach the other end of the ribbon to the dowel with the same type of clip.

4. Place the dowel on a baking sheet. Heat the oven to 275-degrees and bake the ribbon for 20 to 25 minutes. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the korkers cool completely.

5. Release the clips from the ends of the dowel and unwind the ribbon from the dowel. Apply a little bit of a fray preventing treatment to the ends of the ribbon. You can now thread the ribbons through the shoelace holes in the shoes.

6. Gather the 30 korkers side by side if you are making a hair bow. Wrap a piece of string around the center of the bunch and tie it in a knot tightly. Fan out the korkers to hide the string.

7. Spread a thick layer of glue on the top of the hair clip and press the bunch of korkers firmly against the clip. Let the clip dry for 20 to 30 minutes before wearing.
