Save your chip bags after the snacking is over.
Hair bows can be made from a variety of materials besides ribbon including scrap fabric, newspaper, plastic bags and snack chip bags. Rather than throwing out your chip bags, recycle them by making assorted colorful hair bows. The type of bow you choose to make is up to you, as bow styles range from the simple to the layered and complicated. Start with simple bow crafts and move on to more intricate bows once you master working with chip bags as a material.
Instructions
1. Cut the sides of the chip bag to create a flat rectangle. Clean the bag thoroughly with soap and water to remove all greasy residue from the inside of the bag before you begin your work. Wipe the bag dry with a clean towel or paper towel.
2. Use scrap paper to practice making bow designs, such as a simple hair bow shape featuring two wide "ribbon" pieces on either side of the bow's middle. Make the bows about 5 or 6 inches in diameter to create large, eye-catching hair accessories. The pattern should look like two large triangles coming together at their points, which should overlap a little in the middle. Once you are comfortable with your design, cut out a pattern using the scrap paper.
3. Lay the pattern on top of the chip bag material, choosing a section that has nice patterns and colors for the bow. Cut the chip bag material around the pattern.
4. Twist the chip bag hair bow around once at its middle section. This will help give the bow some spring rather than just lying flat on your barrette back. Glue the middle of the twisted bow onto your barrette back or plain barrette with hot glue. Allow to dry for about 5 minutes.
5. Glue a small button, bead or faux jewel to the bow's center using hot glue. Allow to dry for about 5 minutes.
