A wedding invitation will help you decide dress.
Although most weddings are held during spring and summer months, fall and winter weddings are becoming increasingly common. Conservative, formal attire is appropriate for a church wedding, while a restaurant reception may call for semi-formal clothing. Whether you are in the market to buy a new outfit or want to spruce up a favorite dress with accessories, consider fall and winter weather, colors and fabrics to find your perfect wedding ensemble.
Dress
Whether the wedding is during the day or the evening, a woman should wear a dress no shorter than knee-length. A daytime wedding calls for a simple shift dress or a pencil skirt and a blouse; an evening wedding requires a romantic cocktail dress or a long evening formal. Look for heavy fabrics such as velvet or brocade and long or three-quarter length sleeves, or select a frilly jacket, shrug or wrap to keep you warm. You may be drawn to spring colors such as bright yellow and orange; opt instead for warm fall and winter colors such as plum, navy, forest green, burgundy and gray. Never choose white, but black is appropriate for an evening wedding.
Hosiery and Footwear
Choose knee-high boots, lacy pumps or embellished heels to pair with your elegant dress. Avoid strappy sandals, high stilettos or peep-toed shoes in snow or icy weather. Dress up your basic little black dress with a red shoe for a pop of color. Bare legs are fine for a fall or winter wedding but, to keep warm, choose a pair of dark pantyhose. Thick patterned tights are ideal for a monochromatic, simple dress.
Accessories
Pearls are a classic touch to any wedding ensemble, no matter the season. Chunky necklaces, bracelets, brooches and cocktail rings are also appropriate. Pin your hair in an updo and choose a pair of long, dangling earrings that complement your outfit. Don't wear too much jewelry; one or two large pieces is plenty. Top your outfit with a simple vintage hat, or accessorize with a small lacy clutch instead of your usual handbag.
For Men
Black-tie events call for a tuxedo or a black suit with a white shirt and a bow tie. A navy, gray or black suit is appropriate for a formal day or evening wedding; choose a white or cream shirt with a dark colored necktie. A pair of tan, navy or gray slacks with a dark sport jacket, white shirt and a necktie is ideal for a semi-formal daytime wedding.
