Suggestions For Flower Clips

Make beautiful hair clips with artificial flowers like these.

If you don't want to pay big bucks for a flower clip at a boutique, you can make a similar one at home for pennies. A quick trip to the craft store will get you all the supplies needed, if you don't already have them at home. Construct the clip in a few seconds with the help of a glue gun, and your colorful accessory is ready to wear.

Singed Silk Petals

The Simply Vintage Girl website has a great craft idea for making vintage-looking flower petals from any synthetic silky fabric. Simply cut several circles from the fabric in different sizes. Snip into the edges of the circle to make petals. Light a candle, and hold the edges of the circle above the flame, rotating the circle so it doesn't catch fire. The heat from the flame should melt the edges of the circle, producing a crinkled effect. Glue the smaller circles directly on top of the larger ones for a multi-layered flower. Glue a pretty bead or stone in the center of the flower to finish, then attach it to the clip.

Artificial Flower Clips

Making a hair clip from artificial flower petals is quick and easy, if done correctly. First, take the artificial flower apart completely, separating it from the stem and removing all the plastic parts. Keep only the fabric flower layers, most of which will have a hole in the center. Stack the flower layers on top of each other, aligning the center hole. For an easy finish, stick a brad through the center hole, and separate the two back arms to secure it to the clip. Brads used for scrapbooking come in a variety of shapes and colors.

Felt and Fancy Thread

This technique, shared on the Think Crafts website, requires that you cut several circles in varying sizes from coordinating colors of felt. Arrange the circles so that the smaller ones sit directly on top of the larger ones. With a needle and thread in a contrasting color, stitch around the perimeter of the smallest circle, sewing all the circles together in the process. While it's not necessary, you can stitch around the perimeters of the other circles to add more of the colorful thread to the project. Once the flower is complete, hot glue it to the clip.

Ribbon-Covered Clips

After you've constructed the flower, you must attach it to a clip. Spring-loaded metal clips or snap-on barrettes work perfectly, according to the Frugal Girls website. If you want to disguise the metal on the clip, cover it in ribbon. Hot glue a line of ribbon over and under the arms of a spring-loaded clip. Another way to hide a spring-loaded clip is to glue the base to the flower, and cover the base with an additional petal or other piece of material. You can use very thin ribbon to wrap the top layer of a snap-on barrette to make it look more colorful.
