Instructions
1. The first thing you will need to create your edible bow is a basic fondant. Fondant is a smooth sugary icing used by bakers to create many decorations. First, set your gelatin by thickening it in cold water. The next thing you need to do is slowly heat the gelatin in a double boiler until it is dissolved.
2. Next add the glycerin and glucose (found at specialty shops or online). After approximately 3 -4 minutes add the shortening, then remove it from the heat and add the vanilla extract.
3. Once the mixture has cooled down slightly slowly add in 4 cups of confectioner's sugar, 1/2 a cup at a time. Be sure it is fully incorporated before adding the next portion. After the first 4 cups are successfully integrated you can add the last 4 cups of sugar by kneading it in. Continue to knead until it is completely soft and pliable. You can add more sugar or some water to adjust the consistency as needed.
4. The last thing you will need to do is create the bow. After rolling the fondant out flat, cut as many strips as you would like to create your bow. Loop the strips and attached them together in the center using a dab of icing. You can then cover the center with a final strip by wrapping it around.
