Twotone Bow Instructions

Two-tone bows can be used to decorate packages, embellish hair ties, decorate the ends of pews for weddings and add color to table centerpieces. The two-tone look is created by making a common florist bow using two different colors of ribbon. Practice the florist bow technique outlined in these steps with a single ribbon before layering two ribbons together to create a two-tone appearance. You can use any ribbon width to create florist bows, but for this project, use 1-inch- and 3/4-inch-wide ribbon.

Instructions

1. Measure and cut a piece of florist wire 12 inches long. Set aside.

2. Lay the two lengths of ribbon on a flat surface with the front of the ribbon facing up. Place the 3/4-inch-wide ribbon centered on top of the 1-inch-wide ribbon; line up the ends of the ribbons.

3. Hold the layered ribbons between your thumb and forefinger about 12 inches from one end. Twist the ribbon between your thumb and forefinger so the front of the long side of the ribbon is facing down.

4. Loop the long strip of two-toned ribbon around your thumb, creating a 1-inch center loop. Twist the ribbon between your thumb and forefinger so the front of the long part of the ribbon is facing up. The 1-inch loop will hide the florist wire that holds the ribbon together to make the two-toned bow.

5. Make a 4-inch loop with the long strip of two-toned ribbon to one side of the 1-inch center loop. Make the loop by bending the long strip of ribbon back toward your thumb and forefinger. Loop the ribbon from the front to the back. Twist the two-toned ribbon between your thumb and forefinger so the front of the long end of the ribbon is facing up. Hold the twist between your thumb and forefinger. Repeat the process for a total of five loops on each side of the 1-inch center loop.

6. Slide the end of the 12-inch piece of florist wire through the center of the 1-inch loop and under your thumb so approximately 6 inches of wire extends on two sides of the bow. Bend the wire around the loops to the back of the two-toned bow. Twist the wire tightly to secure the ribbon together.

7. Insert your thumb into one of the 4-inch loops in the 1-inch-wide ribbon. Pull the loop into the position where you think it looks best. Do not separate the 3/4-inch ribbon from the 1-inch ribbon. Repeat the process with each loop.

8. Cut the tails of the two-toned bow to the desired length.
