Hair wefts made on a sewing machine are sturdy and durable.
A hair weft is a type of weave extension used for people and dolls. Hair wefts are created by machine sewing or hand-tying strands of synthetic or human hair to a strip, such as tissue paper or ribbon. Machine-sewn hair wefts are generally thicker and sturdier than hand-tied hair wefts and are more versatile because they can be cut to size without causing much unraveling or shedding. Hair wefts can be used by people to achieve thicker and longer hair or used on dolls as a wig.
Instructions
Preparation
1. Separate the amount of hair strands you want to put into your weft and set them aside. Make sure all strands of hair are the same length.
2. Set the sewing machine to the smallest stitch setting and thread it with thread that is the same color as the strands of hair.
3. Cut two strips of tissue paper that are both 3 inches wide and as long as possible. Use tissue paper that is similar in color to the hair.
4. Lay one strip of tissue paper on a flat surface, then spread the hair strands out in a thin layer about 3 inches wide on top of the tissue paper. Make sure the top of the hair falls extends beyond the top edge of the tissue paper.
5. Cover the layer of hair with the second strip of tissue paper, and then pick up the tissue paper and hair and place them carefully on the sewing machine.
Sewing
6. Sew a single line horizontally down the center of the layers of tissue paper and hair until you are about a half an inch away from where the strands of hair end.
7. Lift up the top layer of tissue paper and spread more hair strands out in a thin layer about 3 inches wide on top of the tissue paper and make sure it overlaps the first section of hair strands.
8. Pull the top layer of tissue paper back over the strands of hair and continue sewing where you left off.
9. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have attached strands of hair to the entire length of tissue paper.
10. Return to the beginning of the tissue paper and sew another row of stitches down the length of the tissue paper. This row of stitches should be an inch under the first row.
11. Sew a third row of stitches down the length of the tissue paper in between the first two rows.
12. Pull the outer pieces of the top layer of tissue paper away from the stitching to remove it, and then remove the middle piece of the top layer of tissue paper from the stitching using a safety or ball-headed pin.
13. Fold the bottom layer of tissue paper along the center row of stitches, and then sew another row of stitches down the length of the tissue paper between the two visible rows. Remove any excess tissue paper that remains on the hair weft.
