Make Children'S Hair Bows

Hair bows are very popular among girls of all ages. Here's a method of making your own pretty hair bows to complement any ensemble. They are fun to make and inexpensive too.

Instructions

1. Remove and set aside the inner metal piece from the French pinch barrette. Thread needle with four strands of thread approximately 48 inches long. Knot strands securely. Seal ribbon edges with Fray Check.

2. Take all three ribbons and hold them together, stacked one on top of the other. With threaded needle, come up from the bottom of the stack of ribbon, approximately 1/4 inch from the ends. Pull thread through until knot stops at the underside of the ribbons. Place the ribbons on the barrette with the knotted side against the barrette and the top side of the ribbons facing up from the barrette.

3. Stitch the needle through the hole found in end of the barrette on the spring end of the barrette. Repeat this stitch, securely attaching the ribbon to the end of the barrette.

For the next steps, it will not be necessary to use the needle to attach the ribbon--you will simply be wrapping the thread around the ribbon and the barrette.

Move in along the barrette and next wrap the thread around the ribbon just inside the spring mechanism of the barrette.

4. Turn the barrette over with the flat side of the barrette facing up. Take up a loop of the ribbons. The size is up to you; the bigger the loops, the bigger the finished bow will be.

To secure this new loop, wrap the thread around the barrette and ribbon several more times. Be sure to pull the thread securely with each wrap. Hold the ribbons tightly over the barrette at all times to prevent the ribbons from shifting to the sides or bottom of the barrette as you wrap.

Spread the ribbon loops out slightly and wrap the thread around the ribbons and barrette a few more times. Pull the thread tightly. Slide this newly formed loop to the end of the barrette to make room for more loops.

5. Make another loop similar to the first loop. If desired, you can alter the angle of the loop slightly for variation. Pull the ribbons of the loop apart and wrap the thread tightly around the ribbons and barrette at the base of the barrette.

Continue making loops to fill up the barrette with loops.

When the barrette is full of secured loops, trim off the excess ribbon. Seal these ends with Fray Check.

6. Turn the barrette over so that the underside of the barrette is up. With remaining thread, take a few stitches and knot securely. Trim off thread.
