Make Fabric Hair Bows

Make Fabric
Hair Bows

Hair bows, while most often worn by young girls, can be worn by women of all ages. Usually hair bows are made with ribbon because it comes in strips that makes it the easiest material to shape into a bow. You don't have to use ribbon, however, to make a hair bow. Making your own fabric hair bows is a great way to make a hair accessory to compliment an outfit or to use up small fabric scraps that aren't large enough to use larger projects.

Instructions

1. Using your ruler and scissors, measure and cut a rectangular strip of fabric that is 2 by 5 inches long.

2. Fold the fabric inside out lengthwise and sew along the strip of fabric closed along the rough long edges of the folded fabric, leaving the two short edges open. You can do this stitching with a simple back and forth stitch, just keep your stitches short, about 1/16 of an inch.

3. Tie a knot when you have stitched all along the edge to secure the stitch. Turn the fabric right side out through one of the open ends. Lightly press the fabric with a clothing iron set on a low heat setting. You don't need a deep crease in the fabric, just for it to hold its strip shape.

4. Fold the ends of the fabric in towards the back of the strip a little less than one-third of the way so that the rough ends of your strip can't be seen. Sew a couple of back and forth stitches in the center of rectangle that you just created to hold this fold. You can lightly press the fabric with the iron again if it needs more structure.

5. Bunch the rectangle of fabric in the center to form a bow shape. You may have to try this a couple of times before you get a shape that you are happy with.

6. Wrap a 6-inch length of thread around the pinched area of fabric to hold the pinch and then tie the two ends of the piece of thread together.

7. Hot glue a strip of coordinating ribbon around the center of the bow to cover the thread. Hot glue a strip of the same ribbon over the top of your plain barrette to thoroughly cover the shiny metal.

8. Hot glue your bow onto the center of the barrette.
