Make Barrettes And Ties For Little Girls' Hair

Not only are hair barrettes and ties a way for young girls to begin expressing their fashion tastes, but they are also functional pieces that keep hair out of their faces, whether they are playing or doing school work. Make hair ties and barrettes for little girls at home with inexpensive supplies from the craft store for a fraction of what you might pay at a boutique or chain store. Have your little girl help you pick out the supplies for her hair accessories so they are truly a reflection of her personality.

Instructions

Curly Ribbon Barrettes

1. Clip one end of your ribbon to one end of a wooden dowel. Wrap the ribbon tightly around the wooden dowel from one end to the other so the dowel is completely covered by the ribbon. Trim the ribbon to length and clip the other end in place. Repeat this process for the remaining eight dowels.

2. Place all the ribbon-covered wooden dowels on a cookie sheet. Place the cookie sheet in your oven. Set the oven to 300 degrees and bake the ribbon for 20 minutes.

3. Remove the ribbon-covered dowels from the oven and let them cool for at least 20 minutes.

4. Unclip the ends of the ribbon from each wooden dowel and slide the pieces of ribbon off the dowels. The ribbon should now be curly and easily slide off the dowel. If, for whatever reason, the ribbon does stick to the dowel, simply unwrap it from the dowel -- the ribbon will return to its curly state once it is unwrapped.

5. Cut all the curly lengths of ribbon into 4-inch long sections. You should have roughly 36 pieces of curly ribbon, each 4 inches long.

6. Stack all the 4-inch pieces of curly ribbon on top of a 12-inch-long piece of elastic thread. Tie the thread around the center of the stack of ribbon tightly to hold the bunch together. Fluff the bunch of curly ribbon.

7. Use a thin line of low-temperature hot glue to attach a strip of ribbon across the top of your blank barrette to cover the glue. Use a small dot of hot glue to attach the bunch of curly ribbon to the top of the barrette. Allow the glue to cool for five minutes before using the barrette.

Button Hair Tie

8. Trace your button onto the felt with tailor's chalk. Cut out the piece of felt.

9. Cover one side of the felt with a thin layer of low-temperature hot glue.

10. Glue the felt to the button side of the button with the hair elastic sandwiched between the two to attach the button to the hair tie.
