Make Hairbows With Down

Integrate feathers with a bow for a hair accessory.

Making a new fashion statement doesn't need to be costly or complicated. A simple hair accessory can elevate a simple outfit to a stylish ensemble. Feather hair bows add sophistication and call attention to your hairstyle. Whether you prefer an understated look or an elaborate accessory, feather hair bows require only a few supplies and take less than an hour of your time to make.

Instructions

1. Place a metal barrette on your work surface. Measure the length and width of the top side of the barrette.

2. Cut out a piece of ribbon or felt that is slightly longer and wider than the barrette. Glue the ribbon or felt to the metal barrette with a glue gun.

3. Cut out ribbon that is twice the length of the metal clip. Fold the ends of the ribbon into the center to form two loops to make your bow. The ends of the ribbon should touch. Glue it in place.

4. Cut out another piece of ribbon to about 1 inch. Glue one end of the ribbon to the bottom of the bow where the two loops meet. Wrap the ribbon around the bow to cover the center area. Glue the other end to the bottom of the bow. All ribbon seams should face down so they are not visible to others.

5. Glue the bow to the metal clip at the center. Let the bow dry for 30 minutes.

6. Gather your feathers together. Experiment with the flowers by moving them around in different directions and placing colored feathers next to black or white ones if applicable. You may want the feathers to all point the same direction or you may want to fan them out to create a web effect.

7. Use a glue gun to glue the feathers on top of each other. The feathers should form a cluster. Lift up one of the loops of the bow and glue your feather cluster in place so the loop covers the edge of the feathers. You can place the feathers at the middle of the bow or on a side.

8. Add accents to your bow if you prefer. Add a button to the feathers to draw more attention to them. Place a big silk flower in the center of your feather cluster for an elegant look. Add more ribbon to the bow that sticks out like the feathers for a more artsy look. Pearls, rhinestones and fabric flowers are other options you can add to your feather bow.
