Choose the best fit for you from numerous natural styles.
Natural hair offers vast styling flexibility to African-Americans. You can wear your hair in its natural state one day, straight the next and in an afro the next week. Chic styles can be accomplished on a variety of length and hair types. Styling may take a little patience, but you can get the style you desire with a little practice.
Bantu Knots
Bantu knots look chic and vivacious on natural hair. Additionally, they aid moisture retention. "Bantu knots are a way to wear the hair so it is protected form the elements and close to the scalp's beneficial oils," according to CareFair. To make bantu knots, twist sections of hair in a circle until they are close to the roots and tuck the ends. You can wear the knots out or tack them down. When you take them down, wear them in an afro, pinned up or with a headband. Or, try pinning the front into a pompadour and letting the back hang with curls.
Updos
Natural hair can be worn in many sophisticated updos, which are great for special occasions. Try a bun at the crown with ringlet curls hanging by your ears. Or, do a french roll in the back with curls or crinkle bangs. "Essence" magazine suggests that a "chignon is just the thing for a formal occasion. Add a little cocktail dress, and you're good to go." Or, after taking two strand twists out, shape them into a bun and add a bow on the side. Try loose plaits curled at the end and style into a side ponytail.
Wet Sets
Wet sets allow you to shape your hair in a style while it is still damp. Popular styles include roller sets, straw sets and braid outs. With roller sets, use setting lotion or a light moisturizer and roll your hair to the scalp. Large rollers give loose curls while small rollers will give curls similar to natural hair. Straw sets use actual drinking straws as the rollers. The results are small elongated ringlets. With braid outs, wait until your hair is about 70 percent dry and cornrow or plait your hair. You can also curl the ends on small rods. When you take it down, you will have lush crinkles. To keep curls moisturized, make sure to deep condition before styling. "Marie Claire" also says, "Half a dropper of organic hair oil on very damp hair keeps ringlets looking healthy especially during dry weather."
