Dress in a ladybug costume for Halloween, a performance or just imaginative play.
Create an easy, cheap and homemade ladybug costume out of simple materials and items already found in your home. A costume can feature any species of the insect, but the most commonly recognized ladybug is the seven-spotted ladybug, which is bright red with seven black spots on its back.
Body
Create the body of a ladybug costume with common clothing items. Pair a plain, red sweatshirt with black leggings. Alternatively, wear black pants and a long-sleeved black shirt with a short-sleeved red shirt on top. A red tutu with black tights is another option. To add more to the costume, consider attaching black fabric dots to the red sweatshirt, shirt or tutu.
Wings
Create ladybug wings to go with the body of the costume. Make wing shapes out of metal coat hangers. The wings should be oval or round. Pointed-shaped wings will look more like fairy wings. Twist the two wings together with wire and pull nylon stockings over the wire shapes. Use red nylons for the best results. Paint black dots on the hose with spray or acrylic paint.
Headpiece
Convert a black stocking cap into the headpiece of a homemade ladybug costume. Simply poke two black pipe cleaners through the hat and sew to secure. Glue a black or red pom pom to the end of each pipe cleaner antennae. Another way to create ladybug antenna is to attach two black pipe cleaners with pom poms on the end to a hard plastic headband
Other Ideas
Wear black ballet slippers or dress shoes along with a ladybug outfit. Use red ribbon with black polka dots to create hair bows to accessorize a ladybug costume. You can also make bows to add to socks. Consider using face paint to create a red face with black dots. Find ladybug buttons at fabric and craft stores and used them to create a hair piece or shoe clip.
