Funky lampwork bead.
Decorative hair bows add personality to your wardrobe. From simple beaded barrettes to colorful loopy designs, hair bows can call attention to any hairstyle. Make your own loopy hair bows from thin ribbons, shoestrings or a combination of the two. Add jingle bells, buttons, photo charms or other funky embellishments to add distinctive style to your hair accessories. Open your imagination and look around your home for odd objects that speak to your mood or sense of style. You can find split-style barrette forms at craft and discount stores.
Instructions
1. Open the wavy metal barrette so that the clip section is out of the way of the top section. Place the open barrette in a horizontal position on a flat work surface. One of the split metal sides is at the top, and one is at the bottom.
2. Cut 20 12-inch long strands of 1/8-inch wide satin ribbon.
3. Center one ribbon strand around the bottom side of the split barrette so that the ends are even. Knot the ends of the ribbon together in a double overhand knot. Slide the knot to rest against the metal strip. The ribbon is in a loop design as it falls from the metal strip. Repeat this step with nine more ribbons along the length of the metal strip. You should have 10 ribbon loops dangling from the metal strip, with the knots resting in the split between the two metal strips.
4. Thread a lampwork bead to the center of each shoestring. Lampwork beads are handmade glass beads that are often chunky with funky designs. Knot the shoestring on either side of the bead.
5. Tie one shoestring between each of the ribbon strands on the metal strip. Slide the knot to the top of the metal strip. The lampwork bead should rest in the center of the loop.
6. Repeat Steps 3, 4 and 5 to loop ribbons and shoestrings on the other metal strip.
7. Sandwich the center of each ribbon loop between two 3/4-inch square mirror tiles. Jeweler's glue works to hold the tiles together around the ribbon, back to back.
8. Cover each of the knots in the ribbons and in the shoestrings with jeweler's glue. Allow the glue to dry.
9. Cut a 2-inch strip of ribbon three times as long as the length of the wavy barrette. Glue one end of the 2-inch ribbon on top of the metal strips on top of the barrette with hot glue. Make a 1/2-inch-tall loop in the ribbon, and glue the base of the loop to the barrette. Continue to make and glue 1/2-inch-tall loops along the length of the barrette form. Cut off any excess ribbon.
