Make Homemade Hair Bows

Make your own hair ribbon bows out of a variety of colors.

It is easy to accessorize an outfit perfectly when you make your own hair bows to go with it. This is ideal for a very special occasion, or any day you want to feel "pretty." Given all of the beautiful options for ribbons available at your local craft or sewing store, you cannot go wrong--you are certain to find something to complement your outfits. Making your own hair bows can be fun, but keep it simple for now, then experiment with more intricate designs later.

Instructions

1. Choose your ribbons based on your design style. If you want to use one large ribbon, you can loop it a few times to make a dramatic bow. Use skinny ribbons in different colors to create a kaleidoscopic-style bow that will "wow." Use medium-sized ribbon if you are unsure of what you want because these are the easiest to work with.

2. Measure your ribbon to about 2 1/2 feet. You will be able to trim the excess.

3. Lie your ribbon out flat with the design side showing. Take one end in each hand, then cross them over each other to make a big loop.

4. Place your section clip at the center of the loop. Bring the clip down (with the loop) to meet the two tails where they intersect. This will create a classic style bow that looks like the type used to tie a shoe.

5. Bring one of the tails up to make another loop, until it is about the same size as the two original loops. Secure it carefully with the clip. The tail will now be at the opposite end of the bow.

6. Bring the other tail up just like you did previously. Once both tails are secure, grab your thin wire.

7. Twist the wire around the center of the bow to keep it all in place as you quickly remove the section clip and tighten the wire. Make small adjustments as you tighten so all the loops are the same size. Cut any extra ends off to even them up with the loops.

8. Hot glue your bow to the metal barrette. Let it sit a few hours before wearing. To add extra ribbons, follow the steps above. Glue the ribbons in the center where they are gathered directly on top of the previous one.
