Homemade Hair Clips

Hair clips add a little fun and color to your hair do, and help keep your hair in place where they are clipped. Some hair clips, depending on the quality and brand, can be costly. But whether you're looking for plain and fun hair clips or you want fancy hair clips, you can easily make them at home for a lot less money.

Plain Hair Clips

You can purchase a plain silver hair clip from any crafts and hobbies store. You can find different kinds of clips, depending on what kind of clip you prefer. Some look like an alligator mouth when opened. You snap them shut to hold the hair in place. Then there are clips that look like a large, silver bobby pin. For simple and plain hair clips, the kind that opens and snaps shut is the best kind to use. You'll also need to buy ribbon and fabric glue for this project. Think of the color you want for your clip and purchase that color in a thin ribbon. It's best to get the ribbon along with the clips at a crafts and hobbies store because they will have a very large selection of ribbon and ribbon colors. Choose a ribbon that is heavy (not a mesh or lace one), but is thin in width. Then, all you have to do is glue the outer top and bottom of the clip with the fabric glue, and wrap the ribbon around the clip until the whole clip is covered in ribbon. The middle portion of the clip does not have to be wrapped because your hair will cover that part, thus the ribbon won't be seen. Once the glue has dried, the clip can be worn. To make the hair clip more fun, use a ribbon with a design on it.

Fancy Hair Clips

If you're looking to make a hair clip that is more fancy and feminine, you can do that at home too. For this clip, you're going to want to use the clip that resembles a bobby pin. Make sure that one side of the pin is flat and wide enough for a design to be put on. Purchase different sized pearls at the crafts and hobbies store. They come in little pouches, so purchase as many as you think you'll need (normally, two pouches should be enough). Using the fabric glue, glue a straight, but light, line down the flat part of the bobby pin. Place pearls or crystals in any order you like. Using tweezers will help you grasp the small jewels with ease. Allow them to set in the glue until it dries. This will give any look added elegance and drama.
