Hairstyles With Side Pig Tails

Pigtails can be styled for an adult or child.

Pigtails are a classically youthful style that is common among young girls. However, the way you style the pigtail as well as accessorize it can put a new twist on the style that makes it appropriate for a teen or adult as well. Pigtails are also useful and functional when used to pull hair back from an athlete's or dancer's face.

Low Pigtails

Low pigtails give the wearer a casual and laid back look while still keeping the hair pulled back from the face. Part the hair in the middle and gather each side of hair below the earlobes. Secure the hair in place below the earlobes with a hair tie or elastic. You could also opt to braid the hair on each side, starting around the ears and working your way down to the ends. Secure the braids with a hair elastic. French braid the hair, starting at the temples on each side and braiding through the hair ends for a more secure and taught, braided pigtail look. A French braided pigtail is ideal for a dancer or athlete as it keeps the hair pulled tightly back from the face and back.

High Pigtails

High pigtails create a look of youthfulness and even athleticism, as this is a common choice for girls playing sports or cheerleading. The hair is parted down the middles and pulled into a section on either side of the side. The height and placement where you secure the pigtails with hair elastics is a matter of preference. The pigtails can be above the temples, at the temples or even slightly below the temples. Braid the loose hair hanging from the pigtails for a more secure look.

Pigtail Styling

Pigtails, regardless if they are high are low, can be styled to make them stand out from ordinary pigtails. Curl the hair in a high or low ponytail for a polished touch. Crimp the loose hair for a funky, 80s look. Place the hair in high pigtails around the temple and create a bunched look by tying a hair tie around the loose hair at 1 inch increments. For a more sophisticated and adult take on the pigtail, pull the pigtails towards the back of your head, level with the tops of your ears. Braid the hair 1 or 2 inches down on each side and secure with a hair tie. Wrap a strand around each hair tie to camouflage the hair tie, as recommended by the "Seventeen" magazine website.

Pigtail Accessories

Adding accessories to pigtails can dress them up or give them a different spin entirely. Tie ribbons in bows around the hair elastic in the pigtails for a youthful look. Use ribbons in the team colors if wearing them in an athletic setting. Weave ribbons into the braids for a splash of color that makes pigtails stand out. Add clips and barrettes to the hair where it is pulled into the pigtail for an embellishment. Clip in a colorful hair extension or feather into the pigtail for a trendy look.
