Design An Anime Princess

Creativity is key when designing an anime princess.

Anime is a style of cartooning which originated from Japan. The princesses seen in anime can vary from series to series, but all follow the same principles when being drawn. Many beginning artists often desire to create their own anime princess designs, but can struggle with developing the proper proportions of their characters. The best way to master drawing anime princesses is to practice the basic elements of figure drawing and design. Once an artist has a handle on these, they can create eye catching drawings with relative ease.

Instructions

Design Your Anime Princess

1. Review your reference picture of an anime princess. You can find reference pictures by following the links in the resource section below. Make note of hair and costumes designs that stick out to you. Look at one or more different reference pictures to get a feel for the different styles you can use.

2. Sketch several basic outlines of your princess's body. Do not try do create a finished drawing, work quickly and avoid erasing any of your mistakes. Draw basic dress and hair designs onto the outline of your character. Give your designs an anime style by making the hair long and puffy and using different layers on the dress.

3. Experiment with different clothing styles such as Victorian, fantasy, and futuristic. Continue to explore different designs until you create a basic draft you want to use for your princess drawing.

Draw Your Anime Princess

4. Sketch the rough draft of your princess's body. Draw a circle to map out the head and sketch a vertical line down the center of the circle to map out her facial details. Create a line extending from the bottom of the circle to map out the spine. Map out the princess's torso and hips by drawing two squares along your spine. Make the sides of the hips wider than the torso for a feminine look. Map out the arms and legs of the character by drawing two lines extending from the torso and two lines extending from the hips.

5. Pencil the basic shape of your princess's face. Start by drawing her jawline from the bottom of the circle drawn previously. Use smooth lines to give your princess a feminine look. Sketch the outline of her eyes using your vertical guideline drawn previously. Make her eyes large and round. Draw the ears of your princess slightly lower than the eyes; sketch her nose and mouth small for a feminine look. Pencil the basic shape of the princess's hair following the facial details as a guide.

6. Draw the outline of the princess's clothing and body using your rough draft as a guide. Start by following the spine to create her neck and body. Draw the neck of the princess thin and make sure the sides of her body are curved. Draw her arms and legs, exaggerate the thinness of her arms and the width of her hips for an anime effect. Draw the princess's legs long and overlap her body with the basic shape of the dress you designed previously. Erase any part of the princess's body which is now covered.

7. Erase the markings of your rough draft. Draw the details of your princess clothing such as the color patterns of her dress, wrist, and neck wear, gloves, bows in her hair, and frills in the cloth. Sketch folds into the clothing for a more realistic effect. Work slowly and review your dress designs to complete the details. Create thick hair strands for the princess by drawing long vertical lines within the shape of her hair. Avoid making details of her outfit too complex. Keep things simple for an anime feel.

8. Review your picture and erase any extra smudges and pencil markings found. Correct any mistakes seen and ink your picture by tracing over your lines with a black pen. Erase all your pencil markings for a professional look. Add shading to the darker portions of your character's dress by using a cross hatching method with your pen.
