Make Curly Bows Inside A Microwave

Bows can make girls feel dressed-up and add class to any outfit.

Take your little girl's hairstyle from everyday drab to party-worthy chic with curly bows. These ringlet-style bows, also known as korkers, are sold at pricey boutiques and specialty stores. You can make them at home in your microwave for a fraction of the cost. Attach finished curly bows to hair accessories for a touch of instant elegance or glue them to presents or baskets for extra decor.

Instructions

1. Buy 1/4-inch satin, sheer or grosgrain ribbon at your local craft or sewing store. Find ribbons in colors, holiday designs or prints that match you daughter's interests.

2. Cut the ribbons in lengths of 12 to 16 inches.

3. Saturate the ribbons with spray starch.

4. Wind the ribbons tightly around wooden dowels and place them on a microwavable dish.

5. Microwave the ribbons on the dowels for one minute. Microwave for additional 30-second intervals until the ribbons are stiff. The curls are set in the ribbon as it heats. Microwaves can heat unevenly, causing some curls to set before the others.

6. Remove the dish from the microwave and let the ribbons cool completely.

7. Gently unwind the ribbons from the dowels.

8. Cut the ribbons to the lengths of your choice.

9. Tie bows around simple hair elastics to add instant pizzazz.

Arrange the ribbons in a design that you like. Loop them around each other for a loose bow. Align five or six ribbons side by side and tie them all together in the middle for a curly bow. Or, tie a traditional bow as you would with any other type of ribbon.

10. Attach the ribbons with hot glue or a needle and thread to headbands, elastics, barrettes, baskets or presents.
