Make Swirl Hair Bows

Create your own swirl ribbons right at home.

Swirl hair bows, or korker ribbon, are bows that are made into perfect spirals. Although you can purchase these ribbons from a number of different beauty supply stores or craft shops, they can be a bit pricey. So instead, you can make them yourself to save a bit of money -- and you can choose the exact colors that you want to use. What makes the spiral is that the ribbons are actually baked in the over. Baking the ribbon while wrapped around a dowel will allow the ribbon to keep it swirled shape.

Instructions

1. Collect several wooden dowels that are 1/4-inch width and 16 inches in length. You will need one dowel for each ribbon, and keep in mind that one hair bow will need between 20 and 30 swirl ribbons.

2. Place the beginning of your grosgrain ribbon on the top of one dowel. Snap a clothespin over the ribbon and dowel to keep the ribbon in place.

3. Spin the dowel so the ribbon swirls, or spins, around the dowel. When you've reached the end of the dowel, cut the bottom of the ribbon with a pair of scissors, and secure the bottom of the ribbon with another clothespin.

4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until you've swirled as many ribbons as you'd like to use.

5. Heat your oven on bake at 275 degrees.

6. Line your ribbon dowels on a cookie sheet, and place them into the heated oven.

7. Bake the ribbons for 25 minutes. Remove the ribbons from the oven when time's up, and allow them to cool completely.

8. Remove the clothespins from on top of the ribbons, and slide the dowels out of the ribbons.

9. Bunch your swirled ribbons together. Wrap an elastic cord around the middle of the bunch, and tie the cord into a tight knot.

10. Slide a ponytail holder over one of the elastic cord's tails. Tie the cord into another knot to secure the ponytail holder on the hair bow. You can also slide a hair barrette through the knotted elastic cord, as well. Snip off the tails of the elastic cord so they cannot be seen.
