Make curly ribbon hairbows with polyester ribbons.
Curly hairbows, also called korker bows, are made with tendrils of grosgrain ribbon. You can use ribbon that is up to 3/8-inches wide to make the tendrils; using wider ribbon tendrils can make the curly hairbow too bulky. The technique for making ribbon tendrils for curly hairbows is not difficult and the resulting bows are adorable accessories for babies and little girls. Look for materials and supplies to make curly hairbows at your local craft or discount store.
Instructions
Making Curly Ribbons
1. Cut 20 30-inch lengths of 1/4-inch diameter grosgrain ribbon. You can use any polyester ribbon to make curly hairbows. Twenty curly ribbons make a full hairbow; increase or decrease the amount of ribbons as you like, based on the desired fullness.
2. Spray one length of ribbon with fabric stiffener. Clip one end of the ribbon to one end of a 1/4-inch diameter dowel that is 12-inches long. A wooden clothes pin works to hold the ribbon in place.
3. Wrap the ribbon in a spiral around the length of the dowel. Do not overlap the edges. Clip the ribbon to the end of the dowel with another wooden clothes pin.
4. Cover a baking sheet with tin foil. Place the ribbon wrapped dowel on the baking sheet.
5. Repeat Steps 2, 3 and 4 with the remaining ribbon strands.
6. Preheat the oven to 275 degrees. Bake the ribbons between 15 and 25 minutes. Remove the ribbons after 15 minutes and test one for the desired curl. If the curl is too loose, continue baking the ribbons.
7. Let the ribbons cool completely. Apply fray check to the ends of each curly ribbon to prevent the ribbon from unraveling.
Making a Curly Ribbon Hairbow
8. Cut a 1-foot strip of 1/4-inch ribbon. Place the ribbon on a flat work surface. Center the curly ribbons in a pile on top of the center of the ribbon strand.
9. Pull the ends of the ribbon strand up over the curly ribbon pile. Tie the ends in a tight knot around the curly ribbons. Fluff the curly ribbons as needed to make the tied ribbon disappear. Snip off the remaining flat ribbon.
10. Glue the curly ribbon bundle to the top of a barrette form with hot glue.
