Make your own mini tutu.
Wear a flirty mini tutu over jeans, with leggings or by itself. You can make a tutu in a few hours with basic sewing knowledge and sewing supplies. The main fabric used in a tutu is tulle. Tulle is inexpensive and does not unravel or fray, so it does not need finishing or seaming. By sewing the skirt yourself, you can personalize the tutu with your own choice of colors and level of puffiness.
Instructions
1. Measure around your waist with a measuring tape. Measure from your waist to the length you want the skirt. Cut two rectangles out of tulle using scissors, two times your waist measurement for the length and two times the length you want the skirt to be for the width. Cut a piece of 2-inch-wide ribbon to one-and-a-half times your waist measurement.
2. Lay the rectangles on top of each other. Fold the rectangles in half lengthwise. Sew two rows of basting stitch 1/2 inch from the folded edge down the length of the tulle, using a sewing machine. Leave the ends of the basting stitch threads long.
3. Pull the ends of the threads of the basting stitches, gathering the tulle, until it is 1 inch shorter than the ribbon.
4. Fold the ribbon in half lengthwise, with the right side facing out, over the fold of the tulle, leaving 1/2 inch of ribbon extended beyond the tulle on both ends. Pin the ribbon to the tulle.
5. Sew the ribbon to the tulle through all the layers, close to the bottom edge of the ribbon, leaving an opening for elastic. Pull the basting stitches all the way out.
6. Cut a piece of elastic your waist measurement plus 1 inch. Attach a safety pin to the end of the elastic and slide it through the opening you left in the tutu.
7. Sew the two unfastened ends of the ribbon together 1/2 inch from the edges, with right sides facing each other.
8. Remove the safety pin. Overlap the elastic 1/2 inch and sew together.
