Removing a wine cork can be a bit challenging even if you are using a corkscrew. As you turn the corkscrew, you can damage the cork and break it into pieces. It is even more challenging if you don't have a corkscrew on hand and you need to open a bottle of wine. With a few tools and a creative imagination, you can make your own makeshift corkscrew. Just be careful handling the tools because you might break the wine bottle. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Instructions
1. Remove any covering over the cork and discard it. Wipe off the top of the cork as you would if you were using a corkscrew using a clean, damp cloth.
2. Using your hands, place the screw in the center of the cork top. Make sure it is centered properly. If it is off centered, the cork might not come out cleanly.
3. Begin screwing the screw into the cork, but do this slowly and gradually, making sure that the screw remains straight and does not lean to either side of the bottle. Just go straight down until the top of the screw is resting on the top of the cork.
4. Hold the claw hammer in your dominant hand. Gently manipulate the claw part of the hammer beneath the screw head.
5. Ease the hammer under the cork until it cannot go any more. Do this slowly and gently so you do not crack the bottle using too much strength. Once the claw is under the screw all the way, slowly begin to lift the cork out and voila! The wine is uncorked.
