Making your own hair bows can be a bit labor-intensive, but if you are doing it to match a certain outfit, such as a bridesmaid dress, it may be worth the effort to look your best. To make a basic bow is not complicated, but it takes time, steady hands and the right supplies.
Supplies
You will need grosgrain ribbon (length to be determined by the size of the bow), scissors, dental floss, hot glue gun/sticks and a plain hair clip. You can prevent fraying with an anti-fray treatment. For a large bow (4 inches across), you'll need 40 inches of 1.5-inch-wide ribbon and 3 inches of 3/8-inch-wide ribbon for the bow's center.
Bottom Layer
Cut the ribbon into 16-inch and 24-inch pieces. Fold the 24-inch piece over your four fingers twice, starting with the pinkie and ending with the pointer. Remove your fingers while holding the shape and find the center. Unfurl the loops while holding the center, then twist and tie dental floss to hold the center in place. Trim the loose ends of the bow if needed for symmetry. Seal with anti-fray treatment.
Top Layer
With the 16-inch ribbon piece, repeat the steps above, but overlap the ends by 1/2 inch when folding the ribbon. Add the top layer ribbon to the bottom layer ribbon, centering it, and secure it using the dental floss method.
Gluing to Clip
Center the bow on a metal clip, removing the tension bar first. Apply hot glue to secure the bow in the center of the clip and hold it while it dries.
Completion
Now your bow is nearly complete. Measure the amount of 3/8 ribbon needed around the bow center, snip it and seal the ends with anti-fray treatment. Hot glue the ribbon underneath and press it into place all around the clip to cover the bow's center. After the glue dries and the clip's tension bar is replaced, the bow is finished.
