Create hair accessories with netting in any color or style.
A creative fashionista can construct a wide variety of hair clips using netting. Get into fashion-designer mode, and invent boutique accessories ranging from vintage to bridal to couture. You don't need a sewing machine or much experience, just an eye for design and a willingness to experiment. At their simplest, these hair clips are basic pom-poms and at their most complex, they can be glittery, elegant complements to a formal outfit.
Instructions
Small Clips
1. Use a rotary cutter, cutting mat and ruler to cut 3-inch by 20-inch strips of netting. Each strip will make one small hair clip.
2. Cut a 35-inch length of thread. Tie a knot a few inches in from one end, and thread the other end through a needle. Sew a basic running stitch along the middle of a netting strip.
3. Stop sewing halfway down the strip. Push the fabric you have stitched down toward the knot at the end of the thread, bunching it. Continue to sew, and bunch the second half of the fabric when you reach the end, creating a tight pom-pom.
4. Tie the ends of the thread together to secure the pom-pom. Use the excess thread to tie the netting to a bobby pin or hair clip.
5. Stitch or hot glue sequins, rhinestones, small silk flowers or seed pearls to the pom-poms if you want to dress them up. Because the pom-poms are so small, use decorations sparingly.
Large Clips
6. Use a rotary cutter, cutting mat and ruler to cut strips of netting 7 to 12 inches wide and 120 inches long. Each strip will make one large hair clip.
7. Tie a knot a few inches in from one end of a length of thread. Sew a basic running stitch along the middle of a netting strip.
8. Stop sewing periodically to gather the fabric by pushing it back along the thread. To create puffier hair clips, gather the fabric tightly; to create looser, more flowing netting, gather it gently. When your gathered netting is as long as you want your clip to be, tie off the thread and trim the remaining netting.
9. Tie or hot glue the gathered netting onto a long barrette or comb. Use the stitching or glue to secure the gathers. If you have made a very loose gather, consider tucking the sides of the netting down and stitching or gluing them to the bottom of the comb, making a voluminous loop.
10. Add decorative items in whatever style you choose. Suggestions include rows of seed pearls, scattered rhinestones or a single large silk flower.
