Create A Twist Bow

A variety of ribbons can be used to make twist bows.

Every little girl likes to wear a hair bow. However, hair bows can be costly, and no little girl wants just one. Making a twist hair bow at home takes little time and is less expensive than buying one. It is easy to create unique looks using different types and colors of ribbon.

Instructions

1. Select the ribbon -- look at different colors and textures when deciding what ribbon to purchase.

2. Use sharp scissors for a cleaner cut.

Cut a piece of ribbon that is 26 inches long. Also cut a piece of wire that is 4 inches long, and keep it handy for when you're ready to secure your bow.

3. Hold one end of the ribbon, and cut the edge at an angle. Fold the ribbon in half and line the slanted edge up with the straight end. Cut the second end at the same slant as the first.

4. A lighter is easier to use than a match because it creates a continuous flame.

Light a match or a lighter. Hold each end of the ribbon, one at a time, over the open flame to seal the edge. Melting the ends prevents the ribbon from fraying and unraveling.

5. Lay the ribbon on the table, and turn it over so that the wrong side is facing up. Fold the ribbon in half, and lay the center of the ribbon in one hand. Lay the two ends of the ribbon in the other hand.

6. Cross the two ribbon ends, so that they form an "X." Measure about two inches from the ends, and set the alligator clip at the point where the two ends cross. Attach the clip to the two pieces of ribbon.

7. Hold the clip in one hand and the loop of ribbon in the other hand. Place the center of one of the loop legs on the clip. Move the center of the other ribbon end and place it between the first piece of ribbon and the clip.

8. Pull one of the ribbon tails straight up, and move it so that it lays between the last ribbon piece and the clip. Move both of the ribbon tails so that they are parallel to each other. Hold the bow tightly with one hand, and remove the alligator clip.

9. Fold the middle of the bow, so that it makes an accordion shape in the center. Fold the piece of wire around the center and twist it two to three times in the back to secure the bow.

10. Cut the excess wire, and tuck the ends into the back of the bow.

11. Place a line of hot glue on a blank barrette. Place the bow on the hot glue, and press down to secure it.
