Make Oversize Crepe Paper Roses

Flowers are an easy way to add color to a room. You can use them to add to the decor of a party or just as an everyday touch of color for a room. Roses are one of the most popular flowers, but they are also one of the most expensive. To add the beauty of roses to your party or a room in your house without all the expense, you can make crepe paper roses. Even better, crepe paper roses will last much longer than real roses.

Instructions

1. Print off the template linked in the Resources section. You can use the template at the size that it prints, or you can enlarge the template on a copy machine at an office supply store for a larger crepe paper rose.

2. Use your rose template pieces to cut out five of the teardrop petals and 15 of the heart-shaped petals from your crepe paper. Make your petals more realistic by making them cup in the center, by placing them in the palm of your hand and gently forming them with your thumb. Also, roll the top corners of your petals down with a round pencil.

3. Cut three pieces of floral wire roughly an inch longer than you want the stem of your rose to be. Wrap the three pieces of wire together with floral tape to make a stem for your crepe paper rose.

4. Cut a 6-inch strip of yellow crepe paper that is approximately 1 1/2 inches thick. Cut a fringe along the long edge of the strip of paper by making tiny cuts that are about 3/4 of an inch deep and about 1/2 an inch apart from each other. Wrap this around the top of your floral wire stem using floral tape to hold it in place; this forms the stamen of your crepe paper rose.

5. Place teardrop petals around the stamen you just placed on your stem and wrap them in place with floral tape. Then, begin layering in the heart-shaped petals, wrapping them into place with floral tape as your go.

6. Make your calyx piece with green crepe paper using the corresponding template piece. Wrap and glue the calyx piece around the base of the rose.

7. Make three leaves for your rose by cutting out three leaf shapes from your green crepe paper. Put a thin line of glue down the center of each leaf. Place a piece of floral wire on the strip of glue and press the leaf together up around the wire so that it can't be seen. You aren't folding the leaf completely in half, rather, you are just creating a very long thin pocket to conceal the wire. Wrap the leaves into place at the base of the rose with floral tape.
