Make Bows & Tutus

Tutus aren't just for dance class anymore. They are popular for parties and playing dress up.

Nothing says little girl like hair bows and tutus. Both are available for purchase at boutiques, but making your own tutu and matching hair bow is much more fun and much less expensive. You don't even need a sewing machine. By making your own, you can customize the tutu's length, colors and embellishments. Tutus made in sports team colors are popular during football season and holiday colors are popular for Christmas and Valentine's parties. Of course, a matching hair bow is used to top off the tutu outfit.

Instructions

Make a Hair Bow

1. Pass the cut ends of the ribbon through the flame of a cigarette lighter to heat seal the ends.

2. Line up the cut ends of the ribbon so that the ribbon is folded in half. Crease the fold.

3. Unfold the ribbon and lay it flat on a table.

4. Pick up one end of the ribbon and pull it around in a loop until the end of the ribbon is over the creased center mark of the ribbon. The loop should look like the top of a figure "8".

5. Pick up the other end of the ribbon and pull it around in a loop in the opposite direction of the previous loop. This end of the ribbon should overlap the other end of the ribbon at the creased center mark of the ribbon. The ribbon should now be a completed figure "8" shape.

6. Bring the top center of the top loop of the figure "8" straight down and hold it in place on top of the overlapping ribbon ends at the creased center mark.

7. Bring the bottom center of the bottom loop of the figure "8" straight up and hold it in place on top of the overlapping ribbon ends at the creased center mark.

8. Pinch the bow together tightly from top to bottom at the creased center mark of the bow.

9. Use the threaded needle to stitch through the pinched center of the bow. Wrap the thread around the bow's center three times. Knot and cut the thread.

10. Embellish the center of the bow by hot gluing on a button, bottle cap or center knot.

11. Hot glue the bow to a hair clip.

Make a Tutu

12. Measure the waist of the person who will be wearing the tutu. Subtract 2 inches from the measurement and cut the elastic to that length.

13. Use the needle and thread to hand sew the ends of the elastic together. You should now have one loop of elastic.

14. Cut the tulle in half along the fold from the fabric bolt, and then cut all the tulle into 2-inch wide strips.

15. Place three strips of tulle on top of each other in a stack and fold the stack in half.

16. Slide the folded end of the tulle stack under the elastic. Stick the loose ends of the tulle through the fold and pull tightly to secure in place. Continue placing tulle strips in stacks of three and looping them around the elastic until the entire elastic band is covered with tulle strips.
