Make Custom Boutique Overalls

Leftover fabric can be recycled into your custom boutique overalls.

Custom boutique overalls are embellished garments created by covering a plain pair of overalls with ruffles, appliques or fabric paint. These designs can be costly if purchased in a boutique. Create your own with scraps of fabric and trim. These custom outfits can be made for a special occasion such as a trip to a petting zoo, concert or birthday party. Little boys can have a pair with a truck theme, while a little girl might enjoy a special unicorn pair.

Instructions

1. Choose a theme for your custom boutique overalls. Sketch out the basic design. Choose a color scheme. Gather the fabric and trims that you will use. Make individual patterns for the appliques. Trace onto the desired fabric and cut these images out.

2. Place the applique pieces over a stabilizer. Clean coffee filters work well as stabilizers for this project. They are the right size, are inexpensive and will not harm the fabric. Press the fabric and stabilizer and then sew along the outside edge. Trim any excess stabilizer. Add more sewn lines for effect if necessary, such as in a pumpkin applique or flower.

3. Remove the inner seam of the overalls carefully with a seam ripper. Toddler overalls often have a snap closure and will not need this step. The front pocket and the back pockets can also have one side removed for ease in applying the appliques or trim.

4. Pin the appliques in place. Use embroidery thread to hand-sew the appliques on the overalls. Add extra embroidered embellishments or other trim at this time.

5. Cut a 3" to 4"-wide strip of fabric to make a cuff. Fold the long edges in 1/4" and press. Sew along the bottom of the pant leg. Fold up and tack in place with a few stitches. For a ruffled hem, cut a 3' to 4"-wide strip that is twice the width of the pant leg. Hem the bottom edge of the fabric. Pin in place 3 inches from the bottom hem of the pant leg, gathering material as you go. Sew with a straight stitch. Add a wide ribbon to cover this seam.

6. Reattach the seams. Add fabric paint embellishments, ribbon bows, or buttons to the garment to finish.
