Make your own boutique style hair bows using decorative grosgrain ribbon to coordinate with any outfit. Customize your hair bows by varying the width and length of the ribbon strand. For example, to make a medium boutique hair bow that measures 4 inches across, cut 7/8-inch-wide ribbon to a length of 29 inches; to make a large hair bow measuring 5 inches across, use 1 1/2-inch-wide ribbon cut to a length of 35 inches. Once you learn the basic technique, you can adjust the ribbons to suit your wardrobe, an occasion or your personality.
Instructions
1. Cut a 16-inch-long strand of 3/8-inch-wide grosgrain ribbon to make a 3-inch-wide boutique hair bow. Alter the ribbon length by 2 inches to make larger or shorter bows that vary by 1-inch increments. For example, cut an 18-inch long strand to make a 4-inch-wide bow; cut a 14-inch-long strand to make a 2-inch-wide bow.
2. Fold the ribbon strand in half lengthwise. Tap the ends together with clear tape. Cut a V-notch in both ends of the ribbon. Seal the ends of the cut ribbon with no-fray spray. Let the spray dry according to the package recommendations.
3. Stretch out the length of ribbon face down beside a ruler or on top of a cutting mat with measurements so that one end it at the beginning of the measurement tool. Fold the end of the ribbon onto itself so that the tip of the V reaches the 3-inch mark on the ruler.
4. Fold the back side of the ribbon that is facing up onto itself at the 3 1/2-inch mark. You will now have two folded ends. Pick up the ribbon and hold it between the folded ends. Continue to wrap the length of the ribbon in a series of loops on top of the folded ends. The end of the ribbon strand should rest on top of the looped stack.
5. Inset a straight pin through the center of the looped ribbon stack. Place the ribbon so that the head of the pin is against the work surface. Carefully separate the ribbon stacks on both sides of the pin. Work with the ribbon loops until the bow is fluffy.
6. Thread a needle with 20 inches of thread. Bring the thread ends together and tie them into a knot. Weave the needle in and out from the bottom to the top of the center of the bow and leave it in the ribbon. Remove the straight pin.
7. Pull the needle and thread through the bow as tightly as possible to make a pinched center for the boutique bow. Wrap the thread around the center of the bow four times. Tie the thread off on the back of the bow and cut the excess.
8. Glue a decorative button or other small, lightweight embellishment to the center of the bow with a hot glue gun. Glue the backside of the bow to a barrette form with the hot glue gun.
