Make a funky pom pom tutu.
Making a pom pom tutu is neither complicated nor expensive, and can cost a lot less than buying one. Adding pom poms to a tutu creates a polka dot effect for the tutu. This can open up a world of costume possibilities that a regular tutu could not. For example, a red tutu with black pom poms can be used to make a ladybug costume. A red or pink tutu with white pom poms can be used to create a Minnie Mouse costume. A pom pom tutu is a funky alternative to the typical ballet skirt.
Instructions
Attaching pom poms
1. Measure your child around her waist with the measuring tape. Measure your child from her waist to the point where you want the tutu.
2. Cut the tulle with the scissors into three rectangles that each measures 2-3 times your child's waist measurement by the length you measured for the skirt. Cut a piece of ribbon that measures your child's waist measurement plus 24 inches. Cut a piece of the dental floss or crochet thread 2 inches longer than the width of the cut tulle.
3. Lay one of the tulle rectangles out in front of you. Arrange the pom poms on the tulle, no higher than 3 inches from the top of the rectangle. Mark the spots where you placed the pom poms with the pencil or chalk. Remove the pom poms.
4. Cut a length of thread about 16-18 inches long. Thread the needle. Bring the ends together and tie the ends into a knot.
5. Insert the needle into the tulle underneath of one of the places you marked. Pull the thread through until the knot is against the tulle.
6. Insert the needle into the center of a pom pom and pull it through. Move the pom pom down the thread until it is resting against the tulle. Insert the needle back into the pom pom and push it through the pom pom and the tulle. Pull the thread taut.
7. Reinsert the needle into the tulle and through the pom pom. Pull the thread through. Insert the needle back into the pom pom and push it through the pom pom and the tulle. Pull the thread taut. Repeat this one or two more times. Knot the ends of the thread and cut off the excess.
8. Repeat Steps 4 to 7 for the rest of the pom poms.
Sewing the Tutu
9. Place the three rectangles on top of each other with the pom pom layer on the bottom face down. Line up all the edges, and pin the layers together.
10. Set your sewing machine zigzag stitch to the widest setting.
11. Place the dental floss or crochet thread along the top edge of the tulle 3/8 inch from the edge. Sew a zigzag stitch on the sewing machine through the tulle over the dental floss or crochet thread, with the needle coming down on either side of the floss or thread not through it. Sew this way to the end of the tulle.
12. Pull the dental floss or crochet thread, carefully gathering the tulle. Gather the tulle until it is same length as your child's waist measurement.
13. Tack both ends of the gather through the string using the sewing machine. Cut off the excess floss or string.
14. Fold the ribbon lengthwise over the gathered edge of the tulle. Match the center of the ribbon with the center of the gathered edge. Pin the ribbon in place.
15. Sew the ribbon to the gathered edge of the tulle, by sewing through the tulle and both halves of the ribbon, 1/4 inch from the bottom edge of the ribbon.
16. Wrap the tutu around your child's waist and tie the ribbon into a bow.
