Stiffen and shape ribbons for basket crafts.
Ribbons are pleasant additions to any basket gift. Ribbons help give basket crafts more flavor by adding color, shape and style. Ribbons can be twirled, frizzled or shaped in intriguing and unique ways. There are many different solutions and methods you can use to stiffen ribbons for these crafts. You can stiffen ribbons yourself at home in little time and add your own unique ideas to basket crafts.
Instructions
Hairspray
1. Spray the ribbons lightly with hairspray to stiffen them. Spraying too much hairspray can make the ribbons wilt or look clumpy. Over-spraying with hairspray can also affect other decorations you would like to apply to your ribbons.
2. Use rust-proof pins to pin your ribbons where you would like them and to secure them in place. Once you have them secure, leave them alone so they can hold their place properly.
3. Allow to air dry. The hairspray will give a semi-hard finish that coats the ribbons like a snow frost.
Starch Spray
4. Pin your ribbons by putting rust-proof pins into styrofoam or cardboard. Place them into the position in which you would like the ribbons to stay once properly dried.
5. Spray the ribbons with a light amount of starch spray. Reapply another coat of starch if needed to give your ribbons the proper stiffness.
6. Allow your ribbons to air dry and avoid touching them to prevent them from losing their shape while drying. Starch spray gives your ribbons a nice, stiff, sturdy look.
Glue and Water
7. Mix a solution of equal parts water to school glue in a bowl and dip your ribbons in to the bowl.
8. Squeeze any excess glue back off into the bowl and form the ribbons to the look you would like.
9. Pin them into place using rust-proof pins if necessary to help hold the ribbons in place. Allow to air dry properly before adding more decorations.
Liquid Starch and Water
10. Use a solution of liquid starch and water and dip your ribbons into the solution.
11. Use more liquid starch or use straight liquid starch for thicker and stiffer ribbons, or you may use more water for softer and more-pliable ribbons.
12. Squeeze any excess starch solution off and use rust-proof pins to secure into place while air drying.
Sugar and Water
13. Use a solution of sugar and water. Bring equal portions of sugar and water to a rapid boil. Remove the solution from the heat and allow it to cool only slightly.
14. Dip your ribbons into the sugar and water solution and wring out any excess solution.
15. Form the ribbons to your liking and allow to air dry. This makes your ribbons hard, but still allows the natural feel of the ribbons to get through.
