Valentine Crafts For The New Girlfriend

Use candy message hearts in your valentine craft project.

The relationship is new, so fine jewelry and expensive gifts are not appropriate, but giving your new girlfriend a thoughtful, homemade gift would show her you care and have a creative side. You don't have to have a crafting background to complete any of these projects, but some simple craft materials will help. Your local craft store likely carries any suggested supplies.

Teddy Bear With Message Shirt

Give your new girlfriend a cute gift she can snuggle or display. Give her a cute teddy bear wearing a custom shirt. Get creative with your shirt design or message. You could paint hearts along the bottom and the neckline; paint a large heart on the back with both of your initials in it, like you would carve in a tree; paint a large heart on the front of the shirt and write "Be mine" or "So sweet"; paint a Cupid with an arrow on the back and an outline of a heart with an arrow through it on the front.

Buy a plush teddy bear that is at least 20 inches long. Buy a plain white cotton t-shirt, child size small and red, black and pink fabric paints. Wash and dry the t-shirt, spread it out on a flat surface protected by newspaper and sketch your message/design on the shirt with a pencil. Put a piece of cardboard inside the shirt to protect the fabric. Gently squeeze the fabric paint and follow your sketched lines. Allow to dry. Follow the paint's manufacturer's directions on set the paint.

Photo Scrapbook

Gather any pictures you have of the two of you and any mementos you kept from any of your dates. Get a blank scrapbook or photo album, along with some white craft glue and colored fine-tipped pens or markers. Set your pictures out along with any other relevant items and put them in chronological order so the first picture or item is from your first meeting or date and the last from your last date. Glue your pictures in place, starting at the front of the book. Write cute captions, draw funny pictures and include the location, date and time of the picture. Include a valentine's poem, romantic song lyrics or famous romantic quote on random pages. You do not have to fill the entire book, but can add to it as your relationship grows and you experience new things together.

Jewelry or Keepsake Box

Get a papier-mache box at your local craft store or use a cardboard box you already have. Cover a flat surface with newspaper and set your box and lid on the paper. Paint the box and lid with acrylic paint. Make them a solid color, stripes or any other decorative finish. Allow the paint to dry. Use household glue to stick pretty decorative items to the box and lid, such as colored crystals or gems, candy message hearts, heart-shaped buttons or a picture of you and your girlfriend. Allow the glue to fully dry before putting the lid on the box.

Beaded Jewelry

Rather than buy expensive jewelry for your new girlfriend, make some with beads and craft wire. This project is fairly simple, and only requires 18- and 24-gauge craft wire, pliers, a pen or pencil and small beads. Make a ring out of a 6- to 8-inch piece of the larger gauge wire. Bend one end of the wire on top of itself, using the pliers. String the beads on the wire, pushing them down until they meet the end of the wire. Leave about 1/4 inch of wire empty on the second end and fold it on top of itself to prevent the beads from falling off. Wrap the wire around your pen or pencil. This forms the ring. Carefully slide the ring off the pen and set it aside. If you want to make a bracelet, follow the same directions, but use about 18 inches of the smaller-gauge wire. After the beads are in place, wrap the wire around a rolling pin or empty toilet paper tube to shape it.
